The Meath Gaa Co. board could be up to €100000 worse off than they thought they where at their annual meeting December gone. They have found out about this now at another meeting they had last night at Áras Táilteann. Treasurer Brendan Dempsey told members last night that they would have to find savings of up to €275000 rather than the €100000 figure they had just a few months ago.

It was reported that sponsorship could be one reason for this lack of money but no specific sponsor was identified.

Restrictions are now in place until the sum of €275000 is addressed. Treasurer Brendan Dempsey described the meeting as feeling as if they where ” bold children ” when they attended the meeting.

There will be no development work done for the club until the debit has been brought down to €100000.

With all this talk of debt there was some good news as a report showed gate receipts had gone up since last year even with the ticket prices being reduced to €5

Go for Life has launched its annual grant scheme for older groups and clubs. Almost €300,000 has been allocated to this year’s scheme. Groups and clubs of older people all over the country can apply for grants to spend on equipment, to get an instructor in for a few sessions or to organise a Sports Fest in their area. Typical amounts awarded are between €300 and €700 and the grants generally go to active retirement associations, senior citizens clubs, ICA guilds, day centres and community centres.

The Go for Life Programme was developed by Age & Opportunity and the Irish Sports Council. Go for Life gives members of older people’s groups around the country the information and skills which enable them to lead sport and physical activity sessions within their own groups.

Go for Life encourages greater participation by older people in sports and physical activities at a time in life when regular exercise is hugely beneficial. Participation in sport and physical activity is proven to improve quality of life and health for all ages but older people particularly benefit from leading an active lifestyle.

Meath Local Sports Partnership would encourage any group seeking to provide increased opportunities for older people to participate in sport and physical activity may apply for a grant to apply for funding.
Application Forms are now available from Go for Life, Age & Opportunity, Marino Institute of Education, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9. Phone 01 805 7733, email gfl@ageandopportunity.ie or download a form from the Meath LSP website www.meathsports.ie. If groups have any other queries in relation to the Go for Life grant scheme do not hesitate to contact the Meath Local Sports Partnership office on 046 9067337.

Closing date for receipt of applications is 28th September 2012.

Drumbaragh GFC is proud to launch ‘The Spire 5km Road Race and Fun Run’. The race will start at Drumbaragh GFC grounds at 1pm on Sunday, 30th September 2012. The race is in aid of Pieta House, the suicide and self-harm crisis centre. Since opening its doors in January 2006 Pieta House has helped nearly 6,000 people through its five centres in Dublin and Limerick.

The Spire 5km Road Race and Fun Run is an out and back course, with the turnabout located under the famous Spire of Lloyd landmark. The course is ideal for competitive runners, leisure runners and walkers. There are trophies and cash prizes for the first, second and third home in each of the three categories veterans, seniors and juniors. The race is aimed at not only highlighting Pieta House’s work, but also encouraging an active lifestyle, from young to not so young. The race will be chip timed and distance measured by AAI official. Race organiser and vice chairman of Drumbaragh GFC Paul Mc Manus explains why his club chose Pieta House ‘ we wanted to run the 5km race originally just as a fun day out for club members and people from the local area, but we realised we had an ideal opportunity to use it to highlight a cause or charity. So we decided on Pieta House, with the prevalence of suicide in the country particularity among young men, we decided that Pieta House would be the ideal charity to support, all sponsorship monies and a percentage of the proceeds from the race will go to Pieta House’

Entry costs €20 for seniors and veterans, and €10 for juniors and all runners and walkers will receive a commemorative medal. Entry is available online at www.runireland.com or people can register on the day before 11:30am. Entry online is recommended as spaces are limited. Sponsorship cards are available, e-mail spire5km@gamil.com to secure one. Full sponsorship card receive free entry into the race (minimum sponsorship €20)
