Ringfort Walk
Tourism Wednesday, January 12th, 2011The Kells Ring Fort walk is a public walking trail strating at the Tower of Lloyd, (unfortunately the interior of the tower itself is not open at the moment due to refurbishment work).
Ring Forts, dating from the first millennium AD, were dwelling places surrounded by a circular earthwork topped with a wooden palisade, inside which the family lived in round houses.
Most have a bank and ditch but some had several rings. Folklore claimed that ringforts were “fairy forts”, originally inhabited by people with magical powers called Tuatha Dé Danann, who were overcome by Milesians (Spanish Invaders) at Teltown.
Following this battle, the Milesians divided Ireland between them. They took the portion above ground and allotted the portion underground to the Tuatha Dé Danann, who then took up their abode underground in the ringforts and became the Fairies of later folklore.
